Ingredients

Capa 4 copia 2.png

In nature, with nature.

At the core of each distillate, lies the quality of its ingredients. This is the world of Gisella Beretta, the wife of our Master distiller and our botanical expert. Kranewitt is the result of the harmony the two live in, the balance between the care for ingredients and the importance of the craft.

Our distillery is a part of the UNESCO Biosfera Engiadina Val Müstair. At its core lies the certified and controlled protection of the region’s environmental, cultural, economic and political life. All certified products consist of untreated, wild or organic regional produce and thereby rank amongst the best available.

While we will refrain from divulging our recipes, we would like to introduce some of the 28 ingredients. Spirits are based on a long history of botanical use. Most mountain bitters and distillates evolved from the properties given to its ingredients. While such basis may not be used to deduct any medicinal use, it remains valuable information and explains the importance of quality ingredients.

Each year, we hike well above the tree line, to altitudes as high as 2,800 meters above sea level, to collect, pick and amass the botanicals used for Kranewitt. Wild juniper, wild fennel, wild blueberries, the petals of wild dandelion, the petals of wild roses, wild iva and the roots of wild angelica. During these expeditions, we are able to source through hand picking around 90% of the varieties of botanical, fruits, herbs, seeds, cones and roots used for Kranewitt. The remaining ingredients are either, like the cereal base, grown down in the valley or do not exist in the Alps.

At times, we need to travel to nearby Italy to visit our trusted suppliers of Mediterranean produce. Here, we collect coriander, ginger, lemon, lemon peel, oranges, grapefruits, peppers and spices. The origin and the certifiably untreated quality of our ingredients remain essential in selecting these products.
